Celebrate Black History Month at ActOne

Amanda Mason

Saturday 28th October at 16:00 LIYANA + LIVE PERFORMANCES:

This October - Black History Month- we are celebrating Black lives, culture and perseverance, together with JE Delve and Bollo Brook Youth Centre.

We will be screening LIYANA, a genre-defying documentary about the way storytelling can empower, heal, and reveal truths. It tells the story of five orphaned children in the Kingdom of Eswatini who turn past trauma into an original tale about a girl who embarks on a perilous quest to save her young brothers. The film weaves her animated journey together with poetic documentary scenes to create an inspiring story of perseverance and hope. Executive produced by Emmy-winner Thandie Newton, and produced by Oscar-winner Daniel Junge, LIYANA has won more than 35 jury and audience awards.

LIYANA will be precededby the short film I AM SHE, created by a group of young Black women from Bollo Brook Youth Centre and Jamal Edwards Delve, about Black girls and their hair - the struggles, the protective styles, maintenance, beauty standards, amongst other things - to show the beauty of Black hair in all its forms.

The screenings will be followed at 6pm by finger food and live performances at the lounge by young people from JE Delve and Bollo Brook Youth Centre.

The event has been made possible with the generous support of CINEMA FOR ALL.

Tickets are on a sliding scale (tiers of £3, £6, £9 and £14) for access to the screenings and the live event. Book at http://actonecinema.co.uk/movie/liyana/
